I seem to be experiencing exactly the same problem on Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS). CPU/memory utilized maxes out, and then a hard reset is required. – Wayne Sep 14 '11 at 1:47 add a comment 7 Answers Active Oldest Votes 17 SIGTERM is used to restart Apache (provided that it's setup in init to auto-restart): http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/stopping.html The entries you see in the logs are almost certainly there because your provider used SIGTERM for that purpose. If it's truly crashing, not even serving static content, then that sounds like some sort of a thread/connection exhaustion issue. Perhaps a DoS that holds connections open? Should definitely be something for your provider to investigate. share improve this answer follow answered Nov 2 '09 at 15:18 kdgregory 35.2k99 gold badges6969 silver badges9898 bronze badges That's the thing, my provider is telling me it's out of their hands due to the nature of my hosting solution. I keep telling them nothing has changed on my end since this has started happening but it's falling on deaf ears, they just tell me to look at the logs and hire someone to help which is not what I want to hear. I'll add some log info to my OP. – Tom Nov 2 '09 at 15:28 Things from the logs that I found interesting: "server reached MaxClients setting" at 22:25:16, and all the access forbidden messages. Take a look at your access log and see what's happening during that time. – kdgregory Nov 2 '09 at 15:50 Also: note that the SIGTERM happened at 09:17:58, while the previous message in the queue was at 05:01:11 -- this again indicates that the SIGTERM was intentional. I'd again look at the access log to see the previous activty -- I'm guessing it will stop somewhere around 05:01. – kdgregory Nov 2 '09 at 15:51 Finally: I'm not an Apache expert by any means, but all those error messages on restart would worry me. It seems like your provider isn't an Apache expert either. – kdgregory Nov 2 '09 at 15:52 Oh so the SIGTERM is most likely the provider shutting down the server then? I neglected to look at the times and you're right. The crash looks like it's happening here at 5:01 and then when I figure out what's happening, I notify my provider who restarts the server at 9:17. – Tom Nov 2 '09 at 15:58 show 1 more comment 0 Try to upgrade and install new packages sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y share improve this answer follow answered 2 hours ago Bob Pikaar 4322 silver badges66 bronze badges add a comment 0 try to disable the rewrite module in ubuntu using sudo a2dismod rewrite. Assuming you are on a Red Hat-like system such as CentOS or Fedora, the chkconfig –list command will show you which services are set to start for each runlevel. You should see a line like httpd 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off If instead it says "off" all the way across, you can activate it with chkconfig httpd on. OR you can start apache manually from your panel. share improve this answer follow answered Feb 17 at 13:13 Muzaffar 1155 bronze badges add a comment 0 from this page: I found this info: The mod_fastcgi process manager isn't particularly patient though (there's room for improvement here) and since it has to shutdown too, sends a SIGTERM to all of the FastCGI applications it is responsible for. Apache will restart the process manager and it will restart its managed applications (as if the server was just started). SIGTERM is, well, SIGTERM - your application should exit quickly. What this implies to me is that if Database I/O, or some other part of the CGI script, fails to respond in a timely fashion (ie getting slower with data-volume growth), that mod_fastcgi is killing the script......is that how other people interpret these docs or what am I missing.. share improve this answer follow answered Sep 7 '13 at 18:33 Dewey 60755 silver badges1313 bronze badges add a comment 6 I had mysterious SIGTERM shutdowns in our L.A.M.P. server, and it turned out to be an error in a custom PHP module, which was caused by mismatched versions. It was found by looking in the apache access/error logs at the time of malfunction. I assume this is not a dedicated server, On the face of it, this seems like a security exception and somone is trying to exploit it / or there is a process running at a set time which is causing this, can you think of anything that runs on the server every 2 days? Logging tools? SIGTERM is the signal sent to a process to request its termination. The symbolic constant for SIGTERM is defined in the header file signal.h. Symbolic signal names are used because signal numbers can vary across platforms, however on the vast majority of systems, SIGTERM is signal #15. share improve this answer follow answered Nov 2 '09 at 15:09 LiamB 16.7k1818 gold badges7070 silver badges109109 bronze badges The server is a VPS and my provider told me they don't offer support for this type of thing. Problem may be that it's not coming- back- from that automatic restart. – Kzqai Jul 2 '11 at 23:41 add a comment Your Answer Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Required, but never shown Post Your Answer By clicking “Post Your Answer”, you agree to our terms of service, privacy policy and cookie policy Not the answer you're looking for?
